What is the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc mark?
The Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc mark is awarded to local producers who meet criteria of quality, authenticity and respect for the environment. It guarantees that the products come from the Park's territory, are made using sustainable practices and with respect for the landscapes and biodiversity of the Haut-Languedoc.
For a wine estate such as the Domaine de Cambis, this recognition means that our organic wines of the AOP Saint-Chinian Berlou are not only produced under certified organic farming, but also rooted in an exceptional natural territory, on the southern foothills of the Massif Central, in the Hérault.
A long-standing environmental commitment
Ever since the Perolari family settled in Berlou, respect for living things has been at the heart of the estate's winegrowing practice. Organic farming here is not a marketing argument but a conviction: the best wines are born from living soils, cultivated without synthetic chemical inputs, in step with natural cycles.
The conversion to organic farming was begun in 2018, and the estate has been certified Agriculture Biologique (AB) since the 2021 vintage.
Our practices in the vineyard
- No herbicides, no synthetic pesticides
- Mechanical tillage of the soil between the rows, rather than chemical weeding
- Natural grass cover to preserve biodiversity
- Sulphur and copper treatments only, at the doses authorised in organic farming
- Hand harvesting, compulsory in the Berlou cru, which preserves the integrity of the grapes
- Short spur pruning, which naturally limits yields
Berlou, a winegrowing village at the heart of the Park
Berlou is one of the winegrowing villages of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc. Set in the Rieuberlou valley, which runs eastwards down to join the Orb, this village in the Hérault is surrounded by garrigue, holm oak forests and terraced vines on slopes of brown schist, rising in tiers up to 400 metres — the limit of vine cultivation in the appellation. A preserved landscape of austere beauty, which directly shapes the character of the organic wines of the Saint-Chinian Berlou appellation.
