Can you stop to visit a winery between Millau and Narbonne?
Yes. The A75 motorway, "La Méridienne", runs south from Clermont-Ferrand past the Millau viaduct, Lodève and Pézenas, then joins the A9 near Béziers. From there, Domaine de Cambis is about 40 minutes to the north-west, up in the schist hillsides above Saint-Chinian.
It is a stop for anyone driving the holiday route between the Larzac plateau and the sea: an hour's detour there and back for a tasting with the winemaker and a view you will not get from the motorway.
How far is the estate from the A75?
The estate is at 2 route de la Mausse, in Berlou. From the centre of Béziers the drive is 34.5 km, roughly 43 minutes. Allow a similar time from the A75 / A9 junction: you skirt Béziers, then climb through Saint-Chinian, which is 8 km from Berlou.
The last stretch runs on departmental roads climbing through the vines: slower than the motorway, but the landscape has already begun.
Which exit should you take?
From the A75 and then the A9, take a Béziers exit, then follow signs for Saint-Chinian; Berlou is signposted from there. The simplest is to enter "Domaine de Cambis, Berlou" into your GPS, which will bring you straight to 2 route de la Mausse. Parking at the estate is free.
Is the A75 a toll road?
The A75 is free along almost its entire length. The only tolled section is the Millau viaduct. The rest of the descent to Béziers costs nothing; tolls only begin afterwards, if you take the A9.
What can you see from the terrace?
From the estate's panoramic terrace, the view reaches north to the Caroux massif (1,090 m, 13 km away) and, in clear weather, stretches east as far as Mont Saint-Clair at Sète, 60 km off. It is the kind of view that justifies leaving the motorway: forty minutes takes you from holiday traffic to schist hillsides.
How long should you allow for the stop?
Two options, with the winemaker, by appointment:
- Découverte — about 1 hour, four wines, €15 per person.
- Gourmande — about 2 hours, the full range and a board of tapas from local producers, €50 per person (minimum two people).
So allow one to two hours depending on the option, plus the drive. For a stop en route, the Découverte tasting fits into a long lunch break.
Why leave the motorway rather than drive on to the coast?
Because everyone knows the coast, and a schist cru tasted with the winemaker is not something you find at a motorway service area. Berlou has no shop and no cash machine: it is a village of vines, not a seaside stop. What you come for is the opposite of the motorway — a winemaker, a terrace, a glass, a view.
